VIDEO EDITING

VIDEO EDITING

ABOUT COURSE

Video editing is the art of manipulating and rearranging video shots to craft a new visual work. It is an essential part of the post-production process, which encompasses tasks like titling, color correction, sound mixing, and more.

In everyday usage, the term "editing" is often used to refer to all post-production work, even in non-professional contexts. While some may be particular about terminology, in this tutorial, we adopt a broader definition of editing, which includes the following:

Rearranging, adding, and/or removing sections of video and/or audio clips. Applying color correction, filters, and other enhancements. Creating seamless transitions between clips.

The Objectives of Editing When it comes to editing a video, there are various objectives to consider. Your editing approach will depend on the desired outcome, so it's crucial to define your editing goals clearly.

Some common objectives include:

  1. Removing unwanted footage: Eliminating flawed or unnecessary segments is a simple yet impactful task that can greatly enhance the final video.

  2. Selecting the best footage: It is common to shoot more footage than required and choose only the most exceptional material during the editing process. Multiple versions or takes of a shot are often captured, and the best one is selected for the final edit.

  3. Establishing a smooth flow: Most videos have a purpose, whether it’s telling a story or providing information. Editing plays a vital role in ensuring that the video flows seamlessly, achieving its intended goal.

  4. Adding effects, graphics, music, etc.: This is the exciting part of editing that can elevate the overall impact of the video. By incorporating extra elements, you can enhance its visual appeal and engage the audience.

  5. Modifying the style, pace, or mood: A skilled editor can subtly influence the mood of a video. Techniques like mood music and visual effects can shape how the audience perceives and responds to the content.

  6. Imparting a specific perspective: Videos can be tailored to support a particular viewpoint, convey a message, or serve an agenda. Skillful editing can emphasize and strengthen the intended narrative.

  7. By understanding these objectives, video editors can apply their expertise to shape the footage, creating a compelling visual experience that aligns with the desired outcome.

Employment of film and video editors is projected to grow 22 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. Employment of camera operators is projected to grow 14 percent from 2019 to 2029, faster than the average for all occupations. The number of Internet-only platforms, such as streaming services, is likely to increase, along with the number of shows produced for these platforms. This growth may lead to more work for editors and camera operators. In broadcasting, the consolidation of roles—such as editors who determine the best angles for a shoot, the use of robotic cameras, and the increasing reliance on amateur film footage—may lead to fewer jobs for camera operators. However, more film and video editors are expected to be needed because of an increase in special effects and overall available content.
